Patient – Mary Tudor (20015369) Therapist – Dr. Jennifer Reid
Session Number Thirteen Pre-existing Conditions – amenorrhea
(Waller 27) childhood abuse (15)
In past sessions the patient has expressed symptoms of severe depression. She has also hinted at abuse in her adolescent years. In this session I will explore what happened to her, with the help of hypnotherapy. What follows is a written transcript of my session recordings. Mary talking will be indicated by “MT” and myself talking will be indicated by “DR”.
DR: Hello Mary, how are you today?
MT: I’ve been fine, I haven’t snapped at anyone in a couple weeks, like that time with Bishop Cranmer.
*Note “that time with Bishop Cranmer” is a reference to when she set a Bishop on fire. He was killed, and Mary was found not guilty on reason of mental insanity – she believed it was her divine duty to do this to anyone who broke God’s commands. She was sentenced to Fogg’s Asylum, and has private sessions with me every three weeks, the rest of her time being spent in group sessions.*
DR: Well that is encouraging. Now today I think we should talk about your childhood –
MT: NO! I-I mean I don’t remember anything about it.
DR: I understand that Mary, and I have an idea, there is a technique called hypnotherapy, I’ll transport you to a happy place, and then ask you a series of questions about your childhood. You won’t have any of the anxiety you usually do when someone talks of your childhood.
*Goes through the process of putting the patient in a hypnotized state*
DR: Now Mary, tell me about your mother Katherine.
MT: We were so close, I love her so much. (Waller 18)
DR: And your father?
MT: He only doted on me when it suited him, I was talented and it made him look good. (19)
DR: What happened then?
MT: Anne Boleyn entered my father’s life. Because of her my father turned away from the True Church, because they wouldn’t give him his divorce! And Cranmer helped build a case against my mom.
DR: What was your relationship with Ms. Boleyn like?
MT: It was horrible! She starved me and boxed my ears (Whitelock 57), and one time she even threatened to poison me! (Waller 15)
DR: Hmmmm and how was your relationship with your father - you told me before you differed in religious opinion?
MT: H-he sent some of his friends to "convince" me to convert.
DR: And how did they convince you?
MT: One said if “that if she were his daughter, he would beat her to death. He would knock her head against a wall until it was as soft as a boiled apple" (36). I was so scared I had to comply! But I knew in the end God would forgive me, because he knew my heart (36).
*Patient starts whimpering in fear, I decide to bring her out of the hypnosis*
DR: I think that is the end of our session for today, I’ll see you next time.
MT: Bye Doc!
